Frequently Asked Questions

If you're experiencing hard to diagnose problems with your central heating system that has your heating engineers confused, you're in the right place.

Most common issue, that causes confusion, is when the central heating water samples appear clear (like tap water), while you are clearly experiencing flow issues (like F23 fault code on your boiler). There could be more than one reason for this. Firstly, it could be that the system was already power flushed but the hardened sludge that is causing blockage or partial blockage, has not been removed. Secondly, if your system contains any rubber hoses or plastic pipes (they might be in places where you cant see them, like in the boiler or under the floors) it is common for water samples to appear clear, giving the false impression to homeowners and engineers that the system is clean and that rust could not possibly be the issue. This is an incorrect assumption! Rubber hoses and plastic pipes transform the rust from light particles that would easily stay in suspension (giving dark brown or black water samples) into large, heavy sludge flakes that lay down and block up the system. These flakes are so large that they don't show up when water samples are drawn from the system. They also tend to resist normal central heating cleaning technics like chemical cleaning and power flushing. At Powder Flush we work on these systems near daily, with great success.

power flush cost compared to PowDer Flush cost?

Standard power flushing is a process of cleaning central heating systems with fast flowing water and liquid chemical cleaners. Powder Flushing is also a central heating cleaning process but unlike power flushing, Powder Flush uses dissolavle solid pellets and powders of different sizes and densities (depending on the type of system) to scrape of and displace more rust/sludge and hardened rust/sludge. Powder Flush has more steps and takes longer to complete than power flushing. The results we get are better and we regularly get used as an alternative to power flushing or when power flushing has already failed. For our cost go to our price listed here.

Who are we, in short?
Powder Flush limited is a specialist central heating cleaning company that uses a patent protected process that is currently the most successful on the market, at cleaning heating systems. We are often called in after few failed power flushes, changed boiler and recommendations to change the whole system or pipe work.  We have a very high success rate, over many years. There is only one company that can perform this process in the UK and that’s us! Unlike standard power flushing, the machines and chemicals we use are unique to us and not available to buy on the open market.

Is this technology known by other names?
Customers, over the years, have made some of their own names for our technology. As a result, we can also be referred to as
bead flush, grit flush and pellet flush.

How does your “No-Fix-No-Fee" deals work?

If you would want to contract us, under the No-Fix-No-Fee deal. We will agree the price in advance of work (either on the day or earlier, through email). These prices are premium to the ones listed on our website. Under this agreement you only pay us if your system is working correctly after we've done the work. If we need to fit any parts we will do so at cost only. If we fail, you do not pay us at all (£0).

Powder Flush guarantees

YES. For normal prices (see here) there is a 1 year guarantee against pipes or radiators re-blocking (Terms and conditions apply).

For No-Fix-No-Fee prices we guarantee our work for 2 years against pipes or radiators re-blocking (Terms and conditions apply).

I have made a booking, now what?

After you have completed and send us your booking request,we will send you a postcard via mail. This postcard will contain a unique code that you will need to confirm back to us, together with your post code. Details are on the postcard. Once you have confirmed the booking code, we will confirm your booking and the work will go ahead.

How long does the process take?

It is difficult to say how much time we will need to finish the work, as it heavily depends on the system itself. It usually takes between 4 to 10 hours.

Why do you offer “No-Fix-No-Fee" deals?
Many of our clients have spent a lot of money already, on standard power flushes that didn’t work and don’t want to risk more money for something that might fail.
Other clients have been told that their system cannot be cleaned (power flushed) and needs to be replaced. They also don’t want the risk of spending money on a procedure that might fail and then have to pay to replace all the system/pipes anyway. So we (unlike our compeditors) will offer you a no risk option, on getting it all working. No Fix No Fee is at a premium to our normal online prices, we agree this price in advance or on the day, before we start work. Our No Fix No Fee prices are always cheaper than system replacements and can mostly be completed in just one day, with no redecorating needed. With “No-Fix-No-Fee” we assume all the risk of failure.

Why are you so much more expensive than standard power flush companies?
Our process and patented technology is completely different from regular power flushing. We can clean out a lot more rust, even when it's hardened up over the years. We tend to work on systems that are considered “impossible” to clean, like
microbore and plastic pipes. We often work on systems where one or more power flushes have already failed and engineers have given up and recommended complete/partial replacement of the system. Powder Flush is not for light cleaning of a fully working system, there are 1000’s of power flush companies that can do that cheaply. We work on worst case scenarios with around a 90% success rate and we cover nationally, that is why we charge more.

How effective is it really?
If you think that most sludge found in a system is consistency of toothpaste, you can understand that physical particles flowing and scraping against it at high speed will dislodge it better than fast flowing water by itself (standard power flushing). Hence our technology is better at cleaning central heating systems when compared with standard power flushing. Now think of 1000’s of pellets that being forced against the sludge at high speed, over and over. Result, are a very clean pipe!
See our video section for more proof.

When should I power flush and when should I Powder Flush my system?

Power flushing works well in certain situations, but it is a limited technology. Around 80% of our work is on partially blocked, microbore (pipes sized 12mm and under) and plastic piped systems. These are the systems that block up the easiest and are the hardest to unblock. Most of them were power flushed unsuccessfully or clients were told to replace all the pipes/boiler as they can’t be power flushed. There is no system that we cannot Powder Flush and we can offer a “no fix no fee” deal, if you don’t want to take a risk.

Do you just clean my system or do you try to make the system work?
We aim to get your system fully working, if at all possible. We can do any extra work needed on the day. If we need to replace a pump or valve to get it all working, we will do that. We have the most commonly needed parts with us and fit them at reasonable prices.

How do you Powder Flush a blocked radiator?
Powder Flush does rely on some flow in the pipes/radiator. We do have other techniques that we use to unblock and establish some flow first, before we Powder Flush that pipe or radiator.

Can you cause a block in my system?
Blocking a system is impossible, as all the abrasive will dissolve within 30 min, regardless of temperature. Once it has turned from a solid into a liquid, it will not turn back into a solid, so our pellets and powders will not block or damage you pipes/system.

I have never heard of this. Why is EVERYBODY not doing it?
We developed the technology in 2011 and have a registered patent for it. That is why only we can do this procedure and why you and other companies chose "not to have heard of us".

How often do I need to Powder Flush or power flush my central heating system (when do I re-flush)?

Anyone giving you an exact answer without asking specific questions about your system, like amount of radiators and size of pipe cannot give you accurate estimates. The more radiators you have on your system the more rust is produced over any amount of time. A system with only 5 radiators on it will take much longer to block up from a rust built up than a system with 20 radiators on it. Systems that contain plastic pipes or rubber hoses also tend to block up faster than all copper pipe systems. As a rough guide all copper piped heating systems with only 5 radiators and a minimum of 15mm pipes would probably only have to be flushed every 10 to 15 years. While a system with 5 radiators on plastic microbore pipes will probably need re-flushing every 2 to 3 years.

Does Powder Flush cause leaks?

No, we have performed hundreds of Powder Flush procedures and leaks are a rarity. Going on our results so far, we get a leak 1 in 100 jobs (only 1% chance). Normally they are not related to our abrasive, easy to fix with little or no damage.

Does the abrasive cause damage to the boiler or other parts of the system?

No, we designed and tested this technology specifically for central heating systems and we have never had a problem with damage to the boiler or any other parts of the system. The abrasive comes in different densities and pellet sizes, depending on the heating system, the problems with the heating system and we choose the correct combination depending on the cleaning required.

Is it safe to use on all the different metals found in a central heating system?

Yes, it was designed and tested on all metals found in central heating systems with no problems.

How do you know that Powder Flush is better than power flush?

We specialise in “hard to clean” systems like microbore (small pipes) and plastic pipe and often work on systems where one or more power flushes have already failed. We always retrieve more sludge from these systems, no matter how many times they have been power flushed before. If our process was not better at cleaning, we would not get any more sludge out of a system that has already been power flushed, but we do and without fail. We are also a great alternative to replacing the pipes in your central heating system as you don’t need to lift up any floor boards or do any redecorations after we completed the job. Normally Powder Flushing takes only one day while replacing your central heating system might take weeks.
